Italian Renaissance
This style was actually the second Italian Revival style which began with several landmark examples in the 1890's in New York. It's popularity rose due to it's stark contrast from the Gothic inspired Shingle style or elaborate Queen Anne. The second Renaissance Revival homes tended to more accurately represent their italian archetypes due to several factors. By the late 19th century people had the opportunity to travel first hand to Italy. Also, the improvements in printing technology allowed for better photographic documentation. The advances in masonry veneer construction allowed for more modest examples of the style to be possible.
Characteristics include:
A) Low pitched hipped roofs (occasionally flat) with tile roof covering
B) Widely overhanging eaves supported by decorative brackets
C) Generally with arches on first story Doors, windows or porches
D) Upper story windows smaller and less elaborate that windows below
E) Entry usually accentuated by small classical columns or pilasters
F) Facades generally symmetrical
