Chateauesque
The Chateauesque style is based on the monumental architecture of the 16th century chateaus and palaces of France.
Many of these french structures were primarily Gothic, although some Renaissance detailing can also be seen. The shear
massiveness of this style and it's heavy masonry constuction makes it a difficult and expensive style to emulate, and it
was seen realtively briefly from the 1880's until the 1910's
Characteristics include:
A) Complex roof structure, steeply pitched and hipped, with many vertical gothic elements (spires, pinnacles, turrets and shaped chimneys)
B) Multiple "through the cornice" dormers
C) Heavy masonry construction, usually cut or rough stone
D) Elaborate carvings and decorative elements, particularly at upper story balustrades
E) Windows grouped together with transoms in rectangular, 3 point arch, ogee arch or 'rounded corner' shapes
