Beaux Arts
The term Beaux Arts (french for "fine arts") comes from the style of architecture taught at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, which is based largely on ancient Roman Architecture combined wth the later refinements of the Italian
Renaissance and French Baroque elements. The Beaux Arts style strives to represent the highest expression of
architectural classicism possible, drawing upon centuries of clearly defined proportions, ratios and orders. Built from
1885 until the 1930's in America.
Characteristics include:
A) Facade incorporates classical columns or pilaster, typically of the Ionic or Corinthian order
B) Facade symmetrical in composition, balanced with classical proportions
C) Masonry walls, usually of light colored cut stone
D) First story often 'rusticated' (stonework with emphasis on the horizontal joints, representing a heavier texture)
E) Decorative details including carved garlands, shields or floral patterns
