English Arts and Crafts
The Arts and Crafts Movement began in England in the 1880's in response to the overly elaborate 'Victorian' era homes of the late 19th century, and the rise of the industrial age. Drawing upon the basics of the Tudor style, these designs differ in the variety and expressiveness of their details while maintaining simpler forms than the earlier Tudor style. When Arts and crafts movement reached America, it changed it's characteristics significantly and became the 'Craftsman' style. As such, there are very few examples of the English Arts and Crafts style in America.
Characteristics include:
A) Simpler massing, more plain geometric forms and cleaner lines than their Tudor style predicessors
B) Massive chimneys, generally simpler in design than the Tudor style
C) Tall and narrow windows, commonly grouped in wide 'ribbons' with multipane glazing
D) Little to no "decoration", finely crafted joints and details expressing craftsmanship
E) Restrained and simple use of materials- generally only a single dominate material on exterior.
